The Dangers Of Sunscreen

Putting on sunscreen has become a go-to rule when it comes to looking after our skin, but it is in my nature to question information we are told, however seemingly benign. You may or may not know that I tend to go against the grain when it comes to my opinions about a variety of topics and putting on sunscreen has become another controversial issue after looking a little more deeply into it.

I'm about to say something that strangely enough might shock some people...I don't wear sunscreen. To be more specific, I don't wear conventional sunscreen. If I do decide to use it I only use organic -this is not to sound pretentious (using organic products seems to have this sort of tone, which is unfair) it's for my safety and overall well being.

The reason I try to avoid wearing sunscreen altogether is because the Sun is actually good for us!

For thousands of years we have survived without sunscreen and it's only up until recently that it was introduced and cancer rates have only shot up, but this is just an observation.

I have compiled the following list of some of the benefits of that big yellow ball in the sky:

Benefits of the Sun:

The Sun provides us vitamin D, we need this for a multitude of reasons, for example: Healthy bones and teeth, prevents diabetes, multiple sclerosis and diabetes.

Your body has the magnificent ability to adjust your skins rate to withstand the Sun. It does this through your eyes exposure to sunlight...when you wear sunglasses, you don't get this benefit and the benefits that come along with it.

- The people with the highest risk of melanoma are those who stay inside.

Those who live nearest the equator have lower rates of melanoma.

- In 1903, the Nobel prize was awarded to a physician; Neils Finsen for curing tuberculosis with the Sun (aka, heliotherapy)

- Dr August Rollier, a famous heliotherapist, operated 36 clinics where he treated/cured many diseases including: rickets, TB, lupus, small pox & the disinfection and healing of wounds. He lay his patients beds outside in the sun!

- The Sun induces muscle tone WITHOUT MOVEMENT! Well nourished skin responds better to sunlight than mineral deficient skin! I have personally noticed a change in the tolerance of my skin to the Sun when I changed my diet (and I'm very pale!).

- In the winter when our vitamin d levels are depleted we find an increase in flu, cavities and cancer diagnosis.

- There is a LACK of evidence showing links between melanoma and cancer, those who are most vulnerable to malignant melanoma aren't those who have the most time in the Sun. Melanoma usually appears on parts of the body exposed to the least amount of sunlight.

Conversely, here are a few of the reasons I avoid sunscreen:

Like most body "care" products, it is loaded with untested, unsafe chemicals that go into your bloodstream within 30 seconds of putting it on your skin

- To add insult to injury, when many chemicals are heated beyond a certain temperature (for example, when they're left in the Sun), they become unstable and toxic.

- To get the benefits of the Sun, you have to be exposed to all of its rays collectively, they work together for good. Sunblock only particularly blocks the Sun, so you're getting a negative effect from it.

- Studies show that incidences of melanoma increase with sunscreen.

- This is not to say you should get burnt! Getting burnt isn't good for you, but it shows you that it's our body warns us! Try to spend time in the Sun and gage your limit. The time is in the morning.

The decision is yours, but please do further research for yourself to come to your own conclusion. I always think it's good to question and think critically about issues, no matter what the majority say.
