I firmly believe in the power of setting and writing your goals down. By keeping note of your goals, it first forces you to establish some in the first place (many people never allow themselves to think about what they truly want) and it also increases the likelihood of achieving them. I also have an additional reason to why writing down your goals is important and that is because often, success doesn't look like what you think it looks like and therefore you can be achieving goals without immediately realising it!
When we think of succeeding in something, it often translates into an image in our minds of a moment in time; receiving that special call, music starts playing in the background and fireworks go off. Success isn't just a moment in time. Those sorts of pinnacle moments can happen, but what happens more often is much more subtle. Sometimes we forget we even set a goal or had a vision in the first place. My aunt revealed that having set 10 goals early in 2015, she decided later in the year to remind herself what she had written down and noticed that the majority of her list had been ticked off, yet there was no particular moment in time when she knew a specific goal had been met.
I encourage anyone who has written down their goals to check them regularly and to keep them in the forefront of their mind, but if you haven't done this or if you never did write them down, take a look at your life as it is right now and remind yourself of achievements that the younger version of yourself would be excited to hear about.
You might be successful and not realise it because you have a narrow definition for success. Don't just look at financial areas of your life, look at your relationships, your health, your choices and decisions.
A happy life is a successful life, so if you're not feeling so successful, look back at your former self and celebrate even the little victories in your life. The stars don't have to line up in every single area of your life for you to appreciate accomplishments and advances in specific areas. In order to recognise our progress, we must stay present and grateful and recognise that you have the potential to be successful in the next few moments depending on whether you want to recognise it or not.
